Thank you for your interest in volunteering at Chartiers Valley School District! We appreciate the help and support we receive from our volunteers. Chartiers Valley School District Policy, consistent with Act 153, defines a volunteer as follows: an individual in an unpaid position with a program, activity or service who is individually responsible for the welfare of one or more children or has direct contact with children.
The school district’s administrative interpretation of Act 15 of 2015 is that a guest who is visiting a classroom under the direct supervision of a Chartiers Valley employee does not need to have clearance certifications. However, guests must be escorted in our schools and classrooms at all times.
At Chartiers Valley, we require that all volunteers review our Volunteer Handbook before their first volunteer assignment. Also, in compliance with Act 15 of 2015, volunteers are required to obtain clearance certifications.
For up to date information on clearance requirements visit keepkidssafe.pa.gov. or view the Kidsafe FAQ on Volunteer Clearances.
During the summer of 2015, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania also provided clarification on the Child Protective Services Laws. Pennsylvania Act 126 states those volunteers who need the Pennsylvania Department of Welfare Child Abuse History Clearance, the PA State Police Criminal Record Check and the FBI Criminal Background Check, will ALSO be required to have Mandated Reporter Training.
The Act defines a Mandated Reporter as a person who is required by law to report suspected child abuse.
Mandated Reporter Training is a three (3) hour training that can be obtained online. Volunteers may take the online training through the University of Pittsburgh or the Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance.
