Students in Ms. Schweikert's kindergarten class and Ms. Conley’s first grade class honored veterans at their annual Veterans Day Tea on November 10.
In preparation for this longstanding event, the teachers sent a letter home with students inviting any veteran in their family to the Primary School on Veterans Day. This is the 17th year Primary School students have honored veterans on Veterans Day.
The students recited patriotic songs and “God Bless America” and “God Bless the USA” for the veterans at the gathering. The classes started practicing for their choral reading in October as part of their reading intervention. The readings helped the students with reading fluency.
In addition, the students completed a four square writing assignment and made a few art projects, such as eagle hand prints, flag hand prints and soldiers. Students also completed a homework assignment saluting a veteran and the branch in which they served.
Mrs. Schweikert has expressed in the past that her goal is to teach her students the importance of Veterans Day and what it means to be a veteran.
Each veteran attending the Veterans Tea was introduced by a student and given a "thank you" place mat that the classes signed. The veterans also had the opportunity to speak about their service.
The event concluded with cookies and drinks for all.
All veterans are welcome to attend this annual event. Many of the veterans attending were family members of the students in Ms. Schweikert's and Ms. Conley’s classes. Others were family members of Primary School staff. Some of the veterans had been honored in the past and return in ensuing years to help keep the tradition alive.
The Primary School students and staff would all like to say a big thank you to all veterans for their service to our country!
