Easter Seals representative Tracey McDonough presented the organization's "Building Disability Awareness Program" to each of the Primary School's kindergarten classes throughout the week of Nov. 6-10. The goal of the program is to promote awareness of disabilities through hands-on activities with adaptive materials and specialized equipment. The children were able to explore sensory disabilities using Braille books, augmentative devices (computer tablets), and learning sign language. Physical disabilities were explored by ambulating with crutches, walkers, long white canes, wheelchairs, and prosthetic devices. It is the Easter Seals' hope that the program helps students - as they grow into adolescence and adulthood - embrace an environment of dignity, self-respect and opportunity to their peers with disabilities.
