September 12 Board Meeting Recap

The School Board approved salaries, as determined by the board, for Act 93 employees, confidential secretaries, and individual contracted personnel effective July 1, 2017. The School Board approved, effective July 1, 2017, a 3% increase for Scott Seltzer, Assistant Superintendent for School Leadership and approved a service agreement with UPMC (Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic) for specialized academic assistance for students.

Mr. Jason Day of general contractor PJ Dick said that thanks to the coordinated effort of the school board, administrators, and support staff, the school year started as scheduled. Phase 1A concerning the main pod at the Middle School and the Tech Ed and Art wing at the High School is essentially complete. Punch list items in both Phase 1A buildings will be addressed outside of regular school hours. 

Construction for Phase 1B will continue in isolated, non-student areas. Phase 1B is moving forward with the installation of drywall in the MS Tech Ed and Art spaces. The mechanical room (boilers and chillers) at the MS will be up and running by September 18, which is also the expected date for the reopening of the swimming pool. 

Phase 2 at the High School is also moving along with the demolition of "A" Building and the pouring of 12 support caissons for the HS tower. “The building is gone and most of the debris has been removed,” Mr. Day said. "The cafeteria service area is ongoing, but all major areas are connected. Site work for the High School will be the next big push and we will address ongoing dust concerns as that occurs.”

Mr. Day also addressed safety concerns expressed by constituents at the meeting regarding safety, air quality, and construction worker school clearances. Temporary hallways and evacuation routes were approved by Collier Township code enforcement personnel prior to the start of school. The steel containers used for parts of the temporary hallways provide inherent fire protection and egress to the outside is provided by double doors in the wooden hallway connectors. Additionally, Campus Safety is stationed in the hallway during class changes. Stops are being proposed to limit openings of the MS casement windows to four inches and the board will consider a suggestion for the installation of plexiglass along and above the main pod railings at both buildings for enhanced safety. Mr. Day targeted the winter break for completion of Phase 1B - the MS Tech Ed and Art classrooms and gym building.


The Board opted to not appoint an interim director for the short period remaining until the next general election. Candidates for the vacant Director's position may file to be placed on the November ballot.
