Grants provide tree saplings for Earth Day observance

Middle School tree planting volunteers

Grants from Tree Pittsburgh, PNC Foundation and the Scott Conservancy were used to purchase 25 trees/shrubs which Middle School Outdoor Club members planted in the Kane Woods area of Scott Conservancy.

"This is not only an exciting opportunity for our students but it also helps us reverse the dangerous deforestation that occurs most often in urban areas," club sponsor Sara Benis said. "We were able to plant 25 trees which was pretty exciting! More importantly, the students were able to begin the process of becoming stewards for their community."

Joe Stavish of Tree Pittsburgh provided a two-hour in-school training session on March 22nd for the students. Tree Pittsburgh and the PNC Foundation donated over 25 trees for the planting. The Scott Conservancy donated cages and stakes as well as provided snacks and water for the students. District electrician Keith Breitenstein, an active member of the Scott Conservancy, was key in organizing the event and working with Scott Conservancy and Tree Pittsburgh.

Participating students included: Lucy Naples, Eric Allen, Crissandra Brown, Lauren Bailey, Alyssa Colson, Kyle Hinderliter, Owen Kagle, Julianna Diskin, Jude Cato, Reagan Staub, Grace Janas, Abby Crawford, Sydney Bopp, Talia Aguglia, and Rachel Chidlow (HS Volunteer). MS staff participants also included Alicia Guarnaccio, Amanda Bautista, Scott Caplan, Sharlynn Mavrich, Devan Zanaglio, Beth D'Acierno, and Principal Adrienne Floro.
