May 23 Board Meeting Recap

The school board recognized several students for their outstanding academic accomplishments at the May 23, 2017 meeting. In addition, Mrs. Adrienne Floro, Middle School Principal, shared findings from the series focus groups revolving around Middle School Learning Culture and Curriculum. ​As the Chartiers Valley Middle School moves into the new building next year, the students and staff are very excited about having their own library space for the first time in 20 years. As the final step in planning for that open space, Chartiers Valley Middle School teachers and students are selling stenciled bricks from the old High School/Middle School building as a fundraiser to purchase new materials to help achieve the vision laid out by a Student/Teacher Focus Group.

Allegheny County Human Relations Commission Diversity Awards CVHS DIversity Award winners

High School student Tiana Covert received an Allegheny County Human Relations Commission Diversity Awards. In addition, CVHS alumnus, Austin Gutierrez also won an ACHRC Diversity Award for a video he made while in high school last year.



Reception to Recognize Academic Excellence Academic Excellence honorees

Chartiers Valley High School students were recognized at the sixth annual Reception to Recognize Academic Excellence on May 17. In addition to honoring the outstanding accomplishments of our students, the Chartiers Valley Education Foundation recognized the 2016-2017 GIVE grant winners.

Early Child Care Center students observed the hatching of chicks and metamorphosis of butterflies over a 21 day period.

Book leads first grade class to learn about endangered species Stuffed animals representing endangered species

After reading the book, The Penguin Problem, by Abby Klein, in which a fictional first grade classroom raises money to save an endangered species of penguin, Mrs. Venezia's first grade class decided they wanted to do something to help endangered species as well.

Chartiers Valley High School and Middle School project architect from IKM, Matthew Hansen, visited with two Intermediate School classrooms.  Mr. Quinn’s third graders and Mrs. Kern’s fifth graders viewed a powerpoint presentation with respect to all phases of the architectural process. 

Junior Achievement Day JA Day at CVIS

Intermediate School students had a special visit from Junior Achievement (JA) educators on May 10. “Junior Achievement is the world's largest organization dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs” (www.juniorachievement.org).

Pittsburgh Personalized Learning Consortium

Chartiers Valley School District is part of the Pittsburgh Personalized Learning Consortium. Hosted by the Grable Foundation, the Pittsburgh Personalized Learning Consortium includes educators from neighboring school districts who want to integrate personalized learning into their classrooms. In addition to Chartiers Valley, Avonworth, Baldwin-Whitehall, Burrell, Deer Lakes, Elizabeth Forward, Fox Chapel Area, Fort Cherry, Frazier, North Allegheny, Northgate, Steel Valley and South Fayette plan to participate.

Chartiers Valley seniors were invited to "wear their future" for a photo with their classmates this spring. From college and technical school to the military and employment, these students all have exciting new challenges ahead of them. Six Chartiers Valley High School students traveled to Anaheim, California to compete at DECA’s International Career Development Conference (ICDC) from April 25th to 30th.

Post-Gazette: Benedum Foundation funds the future through training initiatives

"...At Chartiers Valley High School in Collier, for instance, Benedum awarded $353,000 to fund engineering curriculum for an advanced manufacturing lab where students have opportunities to earn college credits and technical certificates. Math Olympiad Math Olympiad

One hundred thirty-five students from the Intermediate School and Middle School were among the nearly 150,000 students worldwide to participate in the 2016-2017 Math Olympiad program.  The students participated in a series of five monthly contests, each consisting of five problems, between November and March.

Remake Learning Days STEM Night

Remake Learning Days is around the corner! Chartiers Valley Intermediate School is participating by hosting "Family STEM Night" on Tuesday, May 16 from 6-8 pm at CVIS. 

April 25 Board Meeting Recap


Mr. Nick Morelli announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2016-17 school year at the School Board meeting. Mr. Morelli is retiring after 38 years of service, 11.5 of which have been with the Chartiers Valley School District. Mr. Morelli has been an asset to the Chartiers Valley School District over the last 11+ years. Dr. White thanked Mr. Morelli for his years of service to the district and noted that he will be missed.

"Catch a Cure" Fishing Competition Catch a Cure 2017

Chartiers Valley high school teacher, Mr. Chuck Barber, organized the 8th annual “Catch a Cure” Fishing Competition at Raccoon State Park on Sunday, April 23. High School teacher Mr. Krivanek and HS/MS School Resource Oslick also helped out at the event.

Chartiers Valley School District hosted a community screening of “He Named Me Malala” followed by a panel discussion on April 25, 2017. The topic of the event, which turned out over 150 people, was “Education and Empowerment of Women and Girls in Pakistan.”

World Languages Program Receives Golden Globe Award!

The Chartiers Valley World Languages Program is a recipient of a 2017 Golden Globe Award! The Golden Globe Award is the highest of the Pennsylvania State Modern Language Association’s “Exemplary Program Awards.” Schools must meet the rigorous criteria established by PSMLA in order to qualify for the award.

Beyond the Classroom: Architecture Adventure Kelly Ryan

Last summer, Chartiers Valley senior Kelly Ryan was planning to major in architecture. 

Her interest in architecture developed from the Computer Aided Drafting class she took at Chartiers Valley High School. So when the opportunity to attend a summer architecture camp at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte arose, she decided it would be a great way to learn more before committing to a college major. Intermediate School fourth grade students who participate in the Kids of Steel program have a unique Pen Pal opportunity. For the next two months leading up to the Pittsburgh Marathon, CVIS students will correspond with marathon runner Craig Leon, who has earned several top-10 marathon finishes in his career.

Shamil Zaynullaev takes section crown, six other wrestlers advance to WPIAL Tournament WPIAL wrestling qualifiers

Seven varsity wrestlers qualified for the WPIAL Championships at the Section IV tournament February 24-26. CV finished with the fourth most WPIAL qualifiers (7, tied with Trinity) out of the 12 teams Section IV, including section champion Shamil Zaynullaev at 220 poinds and section runner-up Zachary Macy at 113 pounds.

The Kids of Steel program is off and running again at the Intermediate School. Approximately 75 students in grades three, four and five are participating during their lunch recess on Wednesdays.

CVIS Student Featured in Autism Speaks Chefs Create Event Stephen Galdo

On Friday, November 18th, chefs from several of Pittsburgh's finest restaurants created and served dishes inspired by individuals with autism at the Chefs Create Pittsburgh Event.  The event was hosted by Autism Speaks.  CV third grader, Stephen Galdo was paired with Chef Michael Kyle from Zuppa's Delicatessen.  Chef Kyle created a spicy Italian sandwich to represent Stephen and his love for spicy food.  

Board Meeting Recap: November 23, 2016

The Chartiers Valley School Board met on Wednesday, November 23, 3016 to discuss and review construction matters. The Board received an update on the High School and Middle School construction progress, which remains on schedule. At this time, the Middle School steel is in progress and the elevator shaft that will be used to access the pedestrian bridge connecting the two schools is up.

Congratulations to 2016-2017 Homecoming Queen Morgan Henderson and King Jack Smith. Last year’s Queen Annie Pacella and King Jeshua Anderson presented Morgan and Jack with their tiara and crown and halftime of the September 30th football game.

Homecoming Carnival

The Chartiers Valley community celebrated Homecoming week with the High School's annual carnival on September 28. School clubs and boosters manned game and food booths to earn their activity budgets for the year.

STEAM Grant Showcase MS Students and Teachers at STEAM Grant Showcase

Ms. Paula Scharding and her students, AAmaleen Malcolm, Clare Malone, Mark McAleer, Wyatt Rothaus and Sophie Wasserman represented the Middle School at the AIU’s 2016 STEAM Grant Showcase on Sept. 27.

The Chartiers Valley School board met on September 27, 2016. Dr. White began the meeting by recognizing several district accomplishments, including CV's participation in the AIU STEAM Grant Showcase and the monetary rewards CVHS students earned through the district's partication in the National Math + Science Initiative. 

Seventh graders make their mark on Punctuation Day CVMS ELA Faculty

Seventh grade teams participated in Punctuation Day activities on September 23rd throughout the day. Students rotated through stations in English class. Each station focused on the importance of various punctuation marks and how to use them correctly.

Veterans Day Care Packages Donations

The Chartiers Valley High School student council will have a booth during the annual homecoming carnival where we will be collecting items for veteran care packages.

Mr. Rodrigues's Shaping of the Modern World classes learned about diplomacy and growth in the early 20th century by playing the 1900 Simulation Game over a three day period.

On Thursday evening (September 22), we hosted a community and alumni tour of the current Chartiers Valley High School and Middle School. More than 100 CV alums and community members attended.

Vote to nominate CVMS for anti-bullying assembly

The Middle School No Place for Hate committee recently became aware of an anti-bullying assembly that it would like to bring to the school. The only way to secure the assembly is through nominations from the school's constituency.

Foreign language students take summer trips abroad German students in Germany

In the summer of 2016, seven Chartiers Valley High School students and Herr Kasper spent 9 days touring cultural and historical sites in the Federal Republic of Germany while Senoras Kissinger, Reitlinger, and Bautista led a group of 19 on a trip to Spain. 

Barrage String Concert

The CVHS and CVMS orchestras will be performing with Barrage - billed as "The World's Most Exciting String Ensemble" at the Intermediate School auditorium on October 25 at 7 pm.

August 23 Board Meeting Recap

The School Board approved the hire of two new High School teachers at the August 23rd School Board meeting. In addition, the School Board voted to adjust the school calendar. The following days in May will be Act 80 days for Kindergarten only: Friday, May 26, 2017, Tuesday, May 30, 2017 and Wednesday, May 31, 2017.

Chartiers Valley Students Explore the Future of Fashion with E-Textiles Project

"Paula Scharding has always had a passion for fashion.  Fueled by this interest, along with a stark realization that the curriculum in her Family and Consumer Sciences classroom could benefit from an update, Scharding committed herself during the 2015-16 school year to designing and implementing a truly interdisciplinary unit that provided the students of Chartiers Valley Middle School a unique opportunity to integrate skills in circuitry, computer programming, and fashion design.  Scharding’s e-textile unit was one of 29 projects awarded a STEAM Grant in 2015 by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit." Stadium will be closed this summer
