Everything old is new again in southwestern Pennsylvania. One hundred fifty years ago our region was the birthplace of the oil and gas industry. Today, the worlds of energy and environment are merging, and no region is better positioned than ours to provide the global solutions for the future. High school students from the South Hills discovered what it takes to get jobs in the emerging world of "green technology" at the annual South Park/Chartiers Valley Business Information/Government Career Cluster on Friday, Nov. 6th.

{Flanagan} Bill Flanagan of the Allegheny Conference delivered the keynote address: "Energizing Our Economy -- and Your Career.  Emerging career opportunities in SWPA." Mr. Flanagan's speech gave students from Bethel Park, Canon-McMillan, Mt Lebanon, Upper St. Clair, South Fayette, and host schools South Park and Chartiers Valley an overview of the western Pennsylvania job market and business economy. Mr. Flanagan  that students should have ample opportunity to find work after graduating college as the region has 80,000 more jobs today than it had at the peak of the steel and manufacturing industries in the 1970's. "There is a tremendous opportunity for young residents of the region with the growth of existing and emerging industries and with the older work force reaching retirement age," Mr. Flanagan said. "The three main industries in the region include life sciences, advanced materials, and information technologies. Additionally, there is an enormous opportunity in the energy field with the discovery of Pennsylvania's vast supply of natural gas."
