Philosophy of Interscholastic Athletics

It is the philosophy of the Chartiers Valley School District that a competitive athletic program be provided and that the primary goal will be broad participation by as many boys and girls as possible. It is desirable that teams compete on an even basis with other schools, but never at the sacrifice of sportsmanship, academic priority, or general welfare of the school and students.

With the philosophy of the Chartiers Valley Schools dedicated to providing an educational program for all children of the community, it is the belief of the professional staff that a carefully regulated program of interscholastic athletics should be maintained as an integral part of our total secondary school program. In developing an instructional program to meet the many and varied needs of the secondary school adolescent, care must be given to the inclusion of challenging activities for the physically as well as intellectually talented pupil.

Athletics must be for all boys and girls who are physically able to participate. The athletic program should be educational and should contain desirable learning experiences. Athletics must fit harmoniously in the overall educational program and shall be controlled by established school authorities, both local and state.

The contribution through participation in athletics should promote: health and happiness, development of physical skills, emotional maturity, social competence, moral values, a sense of cooperation, a spirit of competition, self discipline, and an understanding of the democratic process, and a realization of the value of group goals.

Athletic contests should always be played with emphasis on fun, physical development, skills, social experiences and good sportsmanship.

PROCEDURE FOR PICKING STUDENTS UP

FOLLOWING AN

AFTER SCHOOL ATHLETIC EVENT OR PRACTICE

Over the past couple of years, there has been a serious problem in the afternoon when students have finished an after school athletic event or practice and are waiting to be taken home or waiting for an activity bus. The area in front of the high school gymnasium has become extremely congested. Cars are parking or stopping in no parking areas, the buses cannot pull up to the curb and students are running between the cars and the buses. The Chartiers Valley School District will again be implementing a procedure that will relieve the congestion in front of the gym lobby.

Beginning the first day of school, August 29, 2005 the following procedure will go into effect when someone comes to pick up a student following an after school athletic event or practice.

1. All parents that are coming to pick their child up after practice or an event or dropping off for any event, must enter and exit through the lower parking lot. No one will be permitted to drive through, stop, or park in the area in front of the high school gym lobby.

2. Students that are to be picked up by their parents would exit the gym doors, turn right and cross the driveway and take the steps to the lower lot. A crosswalk has been painted on the driveway.

3. Activity buses will pick the students in the parking lot on the home side of the stadium lot. After they pick the students up, they will turn right and exit the school grounds through the back gate.

4. People that are coming for athletic events can enter the front gate as long as they park in the stadium lot. Otherwise, they must enter and park in the lower lot.

5. The members of the coaching staff will instruct the students that are being picked up by their parents to go to the lower lot to get their ride.

6. The Chartiers Valley School District will have personnel on duty to enforce this procedure.

Thank you for your cooperation and assistance in providing a safe environment for the students at Chartiers Valley.
